It seems I have spent more time thinking about lighting design in 2010 than ever before. And while I have admired his work for many years, lighting design by Nikolas Weinstein is my favorite of 2010.
His recent work with Aidlin Darling’s BarAgricole restaurant in San Francisco is a perfect example of his unique style that turns glass tubes into lit liquid fabric. By slumping glass tubes together in a kiln over a series of adjustable rods, the glass fuses together in the exact shape he sets by the height of the rods. The tubes then become thick curved panels and are installed under skylights creating the most beautiful lighting effects during the day as well as at night.
I feel fortunate to have become friends with Nik ages ago when I was working for Frank Gehry and he was creating the glass chandeliers for Gehry’s Pariser Platz project in Berlin. I have since enjoyed spending time in his studio watching the fabrication and magical transformations, as well as following his blog and learning more about glass properties when it comes to creating shape.
For architects and designers out there who have dreams of organic transparent forms that emit light while seemingly defy gravity, then you have found your source to help your dream become a built reality.
