We have been seeing the powerful possibilities of open source design with graphics, but just scratching the surface when it comes to architecture. Architecture for Humanity has been demonstrating the beauty and accessibility of such a model for years with their Open Architecture Network. But I was blown away with what Graham Hill (Treehugger founder and an all-around inspirational human being) is doing with his apartment project. Lloyd Alter (architect, writer, guru of green thinking) turned me on to this project months ago, and they just announced the winners.
Graham’s program for this small 420sf space seemed impossible. It needs to have sleeping for guests, dinner for 12, kitchen, bathroom, work space, lounge space. All in the size of the average homes living room. Even though I am a HUGE fan of getting more in less and having double function for everything, I am embarrassed to admit that I was a big skeptical at first that it could all be accomplished in a beautiful way.
Luckily, I was wrong.
Not only are there a large amount of spectacular projects submitted, but they contain hundreds of really great ideas for any home. I share the website for the project with a big warning: you WILL get sucked in. Probably for hours. But it is worth it. Enjoy being inspired by not only the designs brought to you by challenging questions and requirements and an open source platform, but also the process in itself.
