Paul and Carrie just recently (March 1, 2005) purchased a house built in 1954 and designed by a local architect, Frank J. Barrett of Hanover, NH for a local flamboyant businessman, John L. Brown, and his family. The style that was used as a starting point according to the architect's son, also a local architect, was the International Style. This architect was very active in projects throughout the Connecticut Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire. The word is that at the same time that Frank, Sr., was designing this house he was also designing for a school in Bellows Falls, VT and there are many construction details in common with these two projects. Since Frank Barrett worked mostly during the mid-century there are not many places on the web where he is mentioned or featured. Here is the one link to a project I have found through Googling his name:
Non-Traditional Student Apartments at Plymouth State University
I know that his son, Frank Barrett, Jr. has more "web presence" than his father does.
My plan is that as I have time I will be posting images on this site; I will probably be looking for some ideas and feedback from others on how my wife and I can update this house (windows, electrical, plumbing, etc.) while keeping the essential style intact.
