Constructing the Future, in Australia
The state of modern architecture, and politics, in Australia today closely follows the US.
In this article by Angela Bennie appearing on Australian news site www.smh.com.au she describes the current state of housing and the status of modern design in residential architecture in Australia. Figuring prominently in the piece is an interview with Pritzker Prize winner architect Glenn Murcutt. He is quoted:
"The built environment represents the state of our culture," he says. "For example, this mock Federation architecture that's everywhere today, it is the past, it is about the past, and it means we are living in the past. It is unbelievable. This looking backwards is part of a conservative trend in our society. And I fear for a society that is forever looking backwards."
