The Pixar movie The Incredibles featured the Modern House

I've had a little debate in my mind as to whether or not this movie should be listed in the blog. The house depicted is more of a period piece - a 50s/60s modern ranch house more so than a piece of contemporary modern design. But the movie plays a bit of a game with the time-frame. The neighborhood, the house, the cars in the driveway are all more of a retro take on modern. At the same time the movie is filled with up to date technology, computers, flat screens, jet planes. So license was taken with the time period, bending it to suit the story. And that's why ultimately I think its here, because the filmmakers made a deliberate choice to have this modern house and neighborhood represent the conventional domestic lifestyle that the characters had adopted in order to blend in.

The images in the banner above show the interior of the kitchen with a great big window with frameless corner over the countertops. I love the look of this kitchen, the way the base cabinets slope in away from you. The second image above is the front of the house with a butterfly roof and sections of the facade in masonry with a very horizontal pattern.

Some of the pre-production art work is also very interesting. This rendering of the home's interior is a great mix of modern ranch and Neutra. The interior of the final production was much more like a tract house than this. This has a bit of a Jetson's feeling to it - the art reminds me of many of the cartoons from the 50s and 60s which often depicted modern architecture and interiors. incredibleart

And this study sketch of the house reveals a much more conventional image than the final product. This actually looks like something you would expect to see on the street, not going quite as far as the final with its modern character. Its significant that for the final art the filmmakers decided to move away from this more conventional, more realistic take on a modern house, and went for something that was in fact more idealized, more overtly designed. incrediblesketch
