The plot of this 2001 thriller revolved around the setting in a large modern home.

This movie is about orphans who through unforntunate events are adopted by individuals who are after their trust fund - that sounds oddly familiar? Well rather than a retro gothic setting the orphans settle into a radically modern home and events progress from there.

The role of the Modern House here is to lend an air of affluence and success to the foster parents, an impression that is built to create contrast to their true situation and the desperate acts that follow. Clearly the Modern House signifies the desirable result of success here.

Thanks to Jennifer Tipton for this item.

Architect of Glass House

Small world, the (co-)architect of "The Glass House" lives just across the way from me...George Daniel Whitman. He is on the design review board for the city of Mercer Island. His house is a remodeled split level that I will post on my Photo Tour of Mercer Island Homes post, if I ever get to it. I think it's actually quite over-done, but has some nice elements.

OK, this was a bad movie, but it it brings to mind one of my major obsessions which is observation of TV, film, print, etc, not for content but as a means of design inspiration...I could watch the worst film in the world if the set or location is cool, and I frequently find myself completely losing track of plot and storyline because I'm trying to figure out how something was executed or what artist created the piece in the background. Remember the Chihuly in Frasier's apartment? I think marketing finds modernism convenient both because it implies a certain lifestyle that is, for whatever reason, perceived to be desirable, but also because the inherent absence of clutter and simplicity of line have a tendency to focus one's attention on what is being sold vs. a more typical, distraction-rich setting...not that this applies to we obsessed modernists...

How'd you find all those images?
