autumn

i could post this entry under building, gardening, furnishing, finishing...
summer passed me by. the little time i was able to spend on livemodern i reserved for reading sara's blog.
it is now cooler at night and the mornings are bright and nippy. we sleep better and we are reaping the results of our efforts in the garden: wonderful french fingerling potatoes, heirloom tomatoes of multiple kinds, red chard, runner and pole beans in abundance, and a variety of herbs and flowers. we are now planning the rapini, gailan and garlic plantings, and i am getting psyched for my rapidly approaching school season.
we finished painting the living room and we are now awaiting delivery of the couch we bought earlier this summer - a modern thing in pale icy blue. we found a great modern table with a fabulous chrome base on a sidewalk and later found a coffee table in a second hand shop with a base that matches the other one to an eerie perfection. we plan to refinish the top of the dining room table in ply with edges showing, covered with high gloss white formica, and we're still pondering the next top for the coffee table.
in the kitchen we removed cupboard doors from the cupboards which became open shelving. we painted everything in a crisp, airy white, breathing great freshness into the room. the ceiling will be a somewhat carribean blue. we are building a temporary pantry on sliding drawers in the recess where the old fridge used to be. the old fridge got picked up by the utility company who gave us a refund for recycling it. the new fridge is energy star compliant (24" behr bottom freezer) and is so, so sexy. i mean, if you love well designed machines.
hopefully we'll get the facade painted before the seasonal rains start. we'll install a fan in the main floor bathroom to manage winter moisture better and john will be building a floating counter for the bathroom, with a neat square sink and a neat, modern counter-mount faucet. in mid-season we'll also try to meet with the architect we'd like to work with.
meanwhile there will be homework to be done, a home and design show to be attended, bike rides to be had, mushrooms to be picked and eaten and/or dried, beers and meals to be shared with friends and visitors...
we're playing like kids now, really. a fine time it is and i'll enjoy that to the max before we raise the house.
