The title sums it up...

Carport

Carport Structures Inc. started making our carport yesterday. Although we will not install the carport until the house is up, we ordered it now so we could save money on shipping and get our engineered drawings to submit to the county for plan check. The company is located in Michigan and we’re in California and the shipping cost to Los Angeles was going to be $900. The sales agent suggested that I make my purchase before they drove a shipment to Santa Barbara. Our reduced shipping cost was $350 since they will "piggy-back" our order with the shipment headed for Santa Barbara.

$2200 for the 20 x 20 unit

$525 for the CA sealed engineered drawings

$350 for the freight

$3075 total

No, it won't be painted kelly green

Timeline

I know I'll regret posting this later on. This is just a theoretical timeline for our project; it's what we're shooting for. Our friends and family ask us when "will we break ground?" Because the house is being built off-site, we have a different timeline. Also, most of the time resources for our building project is consumed by the aspect of getting permission. Those are my disclaimers, so here it is:

December 6, 2004; Engineering
This is supposed to take two weeks. I will also obtain the title 24 report during this time (It's required statewide and it is an energy usage assesment for the structure)
December 20, 2004; Permitting
Both state and local permits will take place during this time. We'll probably bring the utilities to the site toward the end of this period. This should take a month.
January 20, 2005; Building Phase
The construction of our home will take about 7 weeks. The delivery will be another week. We'll have the foundation put in during this time as well.
March 20, 2004 Finish work
We hope that this period doesn't drag on too much. Our estimate is three weeks... if we're coordinated.

siting

Thank you for all you do here Sara. David seems to be someone like me when it comes to finding information online, and it's great to see how your project comes along relatively smoothly (so far) with all the effort the two of you put into this.

is there any way for us fans of the project to see your site plan?

Plot Plan

Thanks for your comments

I'd like to think that I do the bulk of the research... ;0) But at night, when motherly duties call, David has to take the torch.

Posting the plot plan is a good idea; I'll do it right now.

thank you and sorry

thanks, that is helpful, and sorry for not giving you more credit for your wonderful research

Don't be silly

No need to apologize, I wasn't offended at all. Thanks again for suggesting that I post the site plan; it would have made sense to post it earlier.
