Michelle Kaufmann Designs, the creative force behind the Glidehouse, has recently developed several custom designs for clients, all based on the same "clean and green" architectural program and modular building process made popular by the Glidehouse. Here is a preview of several of Michelle's designs.

As designs are built, we'll report on their progress on LiveModern. Note that all of these homes are custom, and thus not intended to take advantage of mass production at a modular factory—yet.

  • Beach House—Life on the beach for this surfing client means a space that is always connected to the outdoors. There is a deck off of every room, and the roof floats above clerestory windows so all the upper rooms have a view and connection to the sky. This 1,730 sf, 2-br home is ideal for entertaining, or a quiet retreat. The roof above the master bedroom is sloped to maximize solar panels as well as create a vaulted ceiling that opens to the ocean view.

  • Breeze House—This house is designed to bring the outdoors inside. This 2-br, 1,798 sf retreat features a "great room" for entertaining as well as accentuating ambient breezes and valley views. It is a large 24’' x 18'’ center living/dining space filled with light that feels like it is in the garden. This space is designed with thermal mass to maximize the passive solar capabilities. There is an outdoor shower, a private bathroom garden and an outdoor sleeping area. All the rooms open to a courtyard space for a connection to nature whether it be summer evening or a snowy winter day.

  • Retail/Gallery Building—This is a 2,500 sf retail and gallery space designed to complement lodging at a coastal resort retreat. This client wanted a clean space with good lighting for viewing art and objects. Michelle Kaufmann Designs designed a space to wash the ceilings with natural light through the clerestory windows so no art or objects had direct light. This also creates a space with views to the sky, rather than the parking lot. Through the use of the sliding wood sunshades and the entry sculpture garden, the space can be transformed for varying celebration events.

  • Hillside Loft House—The small hillside lot for this client was a challenge, so we went upwards. This 3-level, 1,341 sf (not including the garage) home has a living suite on the lowest level that can either be a studio/office, bedroom, or separate guest suite. The 1st level has the living/dining/kitchen spaces with a deck on one side and access at the rear for outdoor dining and tea garden, while the second level has 2 bedrooms and a loft space open to the living level below.
